London—The US plans to continue targeting small-scale oil refineries controlled by IS in Syria, a military official said Thursday, a day after a number of plants were hit by air strikes to prevent the Islamist group from being able to refine products for sale on the black market. US-led coalition air strikes in eastern Syria hit 12 small “modular” refineries being used by Islamist group IS to produce fuel to supply and fund their operations, the US said. “There are other refineries they have,” Pentagon press secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters at a briefing. “We’re going to continue to look at future strategic-level targets against ISIL in Syria, and I think you’re going to see more such action.” Syria’s two main government-owned refineries — the Homs and Banias plants with a combined capacity of 240,000 b/d — located in the west of the country have not been targeted.
