Malaysia mulls imports to meet Euro 4 specs

Singapore—Malaysia is pinning its hopes on imports to partially meet Euro 4-equivalent fuel standards by mid next year, as no domestic refineries are likely to produce the cleaner specifications by then. The government held a meeting with oil companies Wednesday, laying out a proposal to encourage them to start imports of cleaner fuels, a Malaysian government source said Thursday. “Yesterday’s meeting was quite significant as other oil companies including [state-owned] Petronas have agreed to also participate,” he said, adding that another meeting has been scheduled after the Hari Raya, or Eid al-Fitr, holiday next week for the companies to respond.
