Cape Town—Malawians began voting this week for only the fourth time since multi-party democracy began in the country in 1994, and it promises to be the closest election contest ever. President Joyce Banda, standing with her People’s Party, faces 10 other candidates from 53 registered parties in her first electoral test since coming to power following the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika in April 2012. But the outcome could upset prospects for finding oil under Lake Malawi, an area seen holding the greatest promise for one of the poorest countries in the world.
