Cruise lines go hi-tech to meet new rules

Houston—The cruise line industry is pumping time and money into exhaust gas cleaning systems technology, also called scrubbers, to comply with more stringent emissions restrictions for vessels operating within North America and parts of Europe that take effect in January 2015. Scrubber manufacturers are touting the technology as one way to comply with the new Emission Control Areas (ECA) regulations, but it is unclear how widespread their use will be.
