ExxonMobil, Citgo go to court in MTBE trial

Washington—In a decade-old lawsuit going to trial next week, lawyers for New Hampshire will seek $770 million in damages from ExxonMobil and Citgo to clean up groundwater contamination that the state blames on the fuel additive MTBE. The additive became a preferred oxygenate in the 1990s to satisfy the Clean Air Act’s requirement for using reformulated gasoline in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution.
