Lagos—Nigeria’s junior oil workers’ union Nupeng said it would call a nationwide strike August 24 if the government fails to pay gasoline importers outstanding subsidies. The finance ministry said last week it would not pay the subsidy to fuel importers until it completes investigations into 21 local companies over fraud. “The hard position the government has taken on the [subsidy payment] portends a grave situation for the country’s economy,” Nupeng general secretary Isaac Aberare told Platts on August 22.
