Washington—A group of topflight US scientists is examining corrosion and other risks associated with transporting diluted bitumen in a study that could have implications for TransCanada’s proposed Keystone XL pipeline and other systems designed to drain Alberta’s oil sands. In the group’s first public hearing July 23, the National Academy of Sciences panel took testimony from US regulators, pipeline operators Enbridge and TransCanada, an environmentalist and engineering experts.
