Diamond, Atwood see opportunities, order drillships

Houston-Two more new ultra-deepwater drill-ships are under construction with options for additional vessels pending from large offshore contractor Diamond Offshore and smaller contractor Atwood Oceanics, the companies announced this week while also releasing financial results for the quarter ended December 31. Diamond's order for a $590 million drill-ship from Hyundai Heavy Industries follows a similar order placed last month (ON 1/4). Meanwhile, Atwood's new $600 million drillship will be the first in its fleet, said CEO Rob Saltiel, who discussed the new vessel February 3 while also elaborating on results for the Houston company's first quarter of the 2011 fiscal year.
