Virginia presses for inclusion in offshore lease sales

Washington—The Obama administration should include a Virginia offshore lease sale in its 2012-2017 Outer Continental Shelf drilling plan, the state’s chief natural resources official told federal regulators on December 6. President Barack Obama endorsed a Virginia offshore lease sale in March 2010, one month before the Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. But in the wake of the disaster, the administration canceled a planned Virginia sale, then opted to not include any Atlantic leasing in its proposed five-year leasing plan.
