Eni beats forecasts with 3.6% Q1 profit gain

London—Italian oil and gas group Eni April 23 posted stronger than expected earnings for the first quarter of 2010 and said it now expects to grow oil and gas production this year. Excluding one-time items and inventory price effects, Eni said net profit in the quarter rose 3.6% year on year to Eur1.82 billion ($2.4 billion), as higher production and stronger oil prices offset weaker results from its refining and gas and power businesses.
