Zeitgeist, n. “the spirit, taste and outlook of a period or generation.” In the early years of the 20th Century, a village smithy shoeing a dray horse could have correctly concluded, as he watched a newfangled motorcar clatter by, that the Zeitgeist was changing. It was the dawn of the automobile age and, symbiotically, the age of oil.
