New York—Fuel costs are the biggest catalyst in the latest flurry of consolidations in the troubled US airline industry, analysts say, and may bring more problems for some as most of the airlines are not prepared for today's cost environment. While Delta and Northwest Airlines announced plans last month for a merger that was in the making for more than four years, other major companies including United, US Airways, and Continental Airlines continue to flirt with the 'merger' word as jet fuel prices trade at record levels.
