US' VeraSun eyes role in cellulosic ethanol

Houston-As industry looks to cellulosic biomass for feedstock use in alternative fuels, VeraSun Energy, one of the US' largest ethanol producers, said March 12 it sees cellulosic as adding to corn-based ethanol supplies rather than replacing them.Although the South Dakota-based company has built its business on corn-based ethanol, it also could stake out a role in cellulosic ethanol production, VeraSun CEO Don Endres told analysts during the company's earnings conference call."We see positive signs that technology from advanced biofuels will develop," Endres said. "When it is ready, we believe it's best utilized as an add-on to corn ethanol facilities like ours."
