Sumitomo Electric says it is the first company to receive certification from Intel for its Thunder bolt optical cables. The company began mass production in December 2012, and received Intel's certification in Q2 of 2013. The optical versions come in lengths up to 30 metres. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) says a study group met in July and completed a first-stage approval of a new standard, called ITU-T G.9700, or “G.fast,” to cover specifications of an RF technology that will increase the capacity of copper pairs in VDSL systems.
