The Big-Five (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK) represented 61 percent of Western Europe's Q1 08 optical cable consumption (in fibre-km) and 37 percent of combined Eastern-plus-Western Europe consumption. From 2000 to 2007, Eastern Europe's cable demand has increased from 11 percent of Europe's total to 38 percent. The Big Five, which in past years had set the pace for Europe's growth, increased only 4 percent from Q1 07 to Q1 08, compared with 7 percent for Western Europe, 81 percent for Eastern Europe, and 27 percent for the combined Eastern-plus-Western Europe total.
