China was 47% of the world's optical cable market last year. Further, its cable demand increased by more than 37 million fibre-km, which is a staggering figure. Yet at the same time, the international trade data do not show a significant increase in optical cable imports. Our interpretation of the trade data as reported in value (US dollars) indicates an increase from 3.1 million km of cabled fibre imports in 2008 to 3.8 million in 2009. This means the domestic industry increased its annual production by 36 million km of cabled fibre, either by adding capacity or increasing the use of existing capacity.
