Nippon Shokubai Hit by Explosions At Himeji AA and SAP Facilities

Tokyo-Nippon Shokubai on 29 Sept. experienced two explosions at its Himeji, Japan, chemical complex, impacting its production of acrylic acid (AA) and super absorbent polymers (SAP). The explosion occurred in an AA residue tank, resulting in a fire that spread to a second AA tank and a toluene tank. A definitive cause of the explosions and length of closures have not yet been determined. Local reports, which could not be confirmed with the company, said the plant is responsible for about 10% and 20% of the global production of AA and SAP, respectively.
