In 2011, the RFCS project "Investigation of measures for extension of blast furnace tuyere lifetime (ExTuL)" was started with the aim to reduce the unplanned blast furnace (BF) stoppages due to tuyere damages. Advanced blast furnace tuyere monitoring systems were developed in order to identify "bottlenecks" in blast furnace tuyere design and operation. Newly designed measuring tuyeres enable to investigate the thermal conditions at the tip of the tuyere in operation. Based on measuring data the heat transport process at the tuyere tip was simulated. An optical control system for early detection of tuyere damages was developed and tested. Correlations between blast furnace operation conditions and frequency of BF tuyere damages were investigated using statistical methods.
