That is the opinion of Gold Fields chairperson Dr Mamphela Ramphele, a former World Bank MD, who tells Mining Weekly in a video interview that South Africa's Mining Charter, the mining industry's tripartite alliance and its joint commitment to a strategic review of the legislative framework collectively provide a unique turnaround opportunity. "The mining industry must take the gap," Ramphele urges, advocating that full use be made of "this period in which we have a supportive Minister and a supportive labour union to get our own house in order", and at the same time benefit the entire economy.
