Six straight days of gains for crude oil futures were cut short on Tuesday as sentiment suddenly turned negative amid jitters about China's economy. News that China's exports fell the most in six months sent a chill through global stock markets and also pushed the prompt Brent futures contract back below $40, just one day after it had breached that level for the first time since early December.
