Russia Trumpets Giant New Oil Find

Russia announced on Wednesday the discovery of a giant new oil field in the Astrakhan region made by little-known private player AFB. Russia's Natural Resources Minister Sergei Donskoi told reporters that the so-called Velikoye oil field in the southern Astrakhan region was discovered by AFB in 2012. Seismic and drilling was carried out at the field last year which confirmed the discovery of around 300 million metric tons (2.2 billion bbl) of reserves under Russia's C2 classification.
