Last-Minute Deal Extends Kyoto Climate Pact

The 17th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Durban, South Africa wrapped up on Sunday with participating countries agreeing to extend the Kyoto Protocol and pledging to adopt an emissions reduction treaty which has “legal force” no later than 2015. The Kyoto Protocol — set to expire at the end of 2012 — will be renewed for a second commitment period from 2013-2017. The 37 developed countries with commitments in the present protocol will submit quantified limitations for their emissions of greenhouse gases by May 1, 2012.
