Hay is not the only commodity best made when the sun shines. Lithium, the mining world's flavour of the month is another, and if the sun does shine too brightly over the next few years the world could find that a lithium deficit quickly becomes a lithium surplus. The potential problem for lithium is two-fold. First, it is not a rare metal: there are more than 500 years of reserves at the current usage rate. Secondly, much of the material waiting to be 'mined' will actually be 'harvested' off the top of South American salt lakes dried by the sun.
