Tanzania is Africa's fourth-largest gold producer and is also a significant producer of gem-stones, with development and exploration underway for a range of other minerals, including base metals, graphite, coal and uranium. Although the country's GDP grew slightly to 7% in 2013, the mining sector contracted from 7.8% to 6.9%, mainly due to lower gold prices. Gold production fell by just under 3% last year, but diamond output expanded by 37%. Similarly, gold value was down 21% while diamond value rose 43%.
