De Beers predicts stronger year after 2012 profits dive

THE world's largest diamond producer, De Beers, said it expected moderate growth for the year ahead after weak demand in 2012 caused a 45% slump in the company's underlying operating profit. De Beers said it expected China and India to lead a pick-up in sales in 2013, but added the US would also have some "upside" while other markets were likely to be challenging. It said high levels of inventory remained in the rough-diamond market at the end of 2012 as the sector faced continued liquidity pressures.
