In December 2011, ministers and senior officials from more than 30 African countries met at the African Union in Addis Ababa. Their task was to agree on a concrete action plan that would realise the objectives of the Africa Mining Vision. The Vision's ultimate objective is to achieve broad-based and rapid socioeconomic development for Africa by using mineral resources to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and so eradicate poverty. It is thus a deliberately ambitious statement on the role that mining should play in transforming the standard of living for millions of Africans.
