Developing the world's next kimberlite mines--Lucara is looking to make the most of its diamond deal

NEAR the end of this year a rare event will take place. A new kimberlite mine will come on stream in Botswana, adding to the little over two dozen producing hard-rock diamond mines on the planet. The owner of the AK6 project, Lucara Diamond Corp finally acquired full control of the asset late last year, when shareholders in African Diamonds plc agreed to a takeover, effectively giving the company the remaining 40% that it did not already own. In fact, the original controlling stake was acquired by Lucara only a year earlier from De Beers for US$49 million, freeing up the project for rapid development following a period of little activity.
