BHP Billiton has made a move into the North American shale-gas industry by purchasing Chesapeake Energy Corp's, Fayetteville assets in Arkansas for US$4.75 billion. The deal comes only three months after BHPB withdrew from its hostile US$40 billion bid for Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. BHPB already has a petroleum division, which operates in six countries utilising deepwater tension-leg platforms, floating rigs and onshore gas-processing facilities.
