Alcoa sales up as prices climb

Alcoa kickstarted the first-quarter earnings season on a strong note, logging a higher income and stronger sales on the back of risingalumina and aluminium prices and improving demand. In the quarter ended March 31, the Pittsburgh-based aluminium producer reported a net income of 308 million dollars, up 20% from the fourth quarterand a marked turnaround from the 201 million dollars loss reported in the same period lastyear.
