China's iron ore imports in the first seven months of the year increased by 31.9 percent to 153 million tonnes, while steel imports declined, according to Chinese media reports citing Chinese customs numbers. A total of 21.6 million tonnes of iron ore were imported in July itself, an increase from the 20 million tonnes which reached Chinese shores in June. The seven-month import total suggests China is on target to import 274 million tonnes of iron ore in 2005, compared with 208 million tonnes last year.
