The formal opening of two new roll-forming plants in China this week will enable BHP Steel to expand its presence in the local coated sheet market. BHP Steel ceo Kirby Adams is in China to preside over the opening of the two plants, one in Langfang near Beijing and the other in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. Both plants, which required a combined investment of just under 10 million US dollars, will be operated by BHP Steel Lysaght, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Australia's largest steelmaker. "The machinery is already in place and will be running within a few weeks," said a BHP Steel official in the company's Shanghai office.
