Nucor finds local buyer for troubled iron carbide plant

Nucor has sold its iron carbide plant in Trinidad to the National Gas Co Ltd of Trinidad & Tobago which is investigating a restart of the 320,000 short tpy facility. The sale comes three years after Nucor gave up on the process at Trinidad, the world's first iron carbide plant, which was eventually shut after more than five years of fitful operations and many refits."We are reviewing a proposal from a technology company to restart the plant," said Omar Gorib, manager of the market development division of state-controlled NGC. "The company is convinced that with certain capital modifications the plant can be operated on a sustained basis that would prove the technical viability of the process."
