Brazil's merchant pig iron producers should achieve record output this year - production is currently at a rate of more than 7m tpy -and export a total of around 4.5m tonnes of basic and foundry iron, a leading producer and exporter said. "This compares to production of slightly more than 6m tonnes in 2001," said Rodrigo Valladares, sales director of Viena Siderurgica. "This year's devaluation of the Real against the US dollar has made producers more internationally competitive and stimulated production." The sector's full capacity is around 7.5m tpy, he said.
