New refinery project challenges Chalco's alumina monopoly

France's Pechiney and Chinese state-owned trading house Minmetals are in talks over an ambitious plan to build a new alumina refinery in China, according to Chinese sources.The proposed refinery would have an initial capacity of 400,000 tpy, rising eventually to as much as 2m tpy over several years. It would be installed at the Baise Yinhai Aluminium Co in Guangxi province, itself a newcomer to the metals industry, thus providing an alternative domestic supply of alumina to the current monopoly held by the Aluminium Corp of China (Chalco).
