New stevia product among first GRAS notices of the year

The sweetener market for food manufacturers is expanding by one, as another product from the stevia plant has been presented to FDA as a generally recognized as safe (GRAS) notice. Although it's nearly April, FDA's GRAS notice inventory has logged only four new submissions in 2013, including two from a company based in Japan and one from a company in the Netherlands for the use of the same probiotic in infant formula and a variety of processed foods, and another, from Chicago-based PureCircle for the use of Reb D, a chemical purified from the leaves of a stevia plant.
