Instead of only high-risk commodities, FSMA proposal focuses on growing practices for all produce

The new FDA Food Safety Modernization Act produce safety regulations, released last week by FDA, do not prescribe special rules for high-risk commodities, an option that could have lowered the cost of the rule. Instead, the 547-page proposal assumes the likelihood that any kind of produce could be tainted as a result of risky growing practices, while focusing solely on microbiological hazards from raw commodities, not chemical or other threats.
