New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the beverage industry companies that are fighting his 16 ounce soda size limits are both wrong, indicates a recent study published in the April 9 issue of PLoS One, the Public Library of Science, an online, free-access research journal (bit.ly/17rxwTo). New York Supreme Court Judge Milton Tingling, on March 11, ruled that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's municipal ordinance, banning the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages in containers larger than 16 ounces, was "arbitrary and capricious," at least temporarily stopping the law from going into effect (see FCN March 15, 2013, Page 20). The city has appealed the decision.
