Research priorities for FSIS, USDA outlined

In the next five years, USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service wants to prioritize research into, among other things: alternative approaches to the N-60 sampling method; pre-harvest interventions to minimize carcass contamination; and testing technologies to reduce the amount of time needed to obtain pathogen test results. In a statement published Dec. 6, Elisabeth Hagen, USDA's undersecretary for food safety, explains that while FSIS does not conduct any research directly, the agency wants to "effectively use science to understand foodborne illness and emerging trends" about public health and safety.
