FDA sets new DEHP standard for bottled water

Bottled water makers are required, starting April 1, to monitor both their water sources and finished bottled water products for di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) at least once per year, unless they meet the criteria for source water monitoring exemptions under the current Good Manufacturing Practices regulations, according to FDA's final rule, published Oct. 19 in the Federal Register.The rule has been a long time coming. FDA first drafted its DEHP regulation in 1993, a year after the EPA set a maximum contaminant level (MCL) for five inorganic chemicals, 18 synthetic organic chemicals and sulfate in drinking water. The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (section 410) requires FDA to either adopt EPA regulations for bottled water or publish its reasons for not making the changes.
