Though the trigger for allergic reaction might be more sensitive for people suffering from celiac disease, the food industry is pleading with FDA to maintain its proposed threshold for "gluten free" claims at 20 parts per million. On Aug. 3, FDA reopened the comment period on its 2007 proposal on labeling foods as "gluten free," (see FCN Aug. 5, 2011, Page 4). The agency's proposed rule conforms to the standard set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission in 2008. That standard, which has been adopted by the European Commission and is scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1, will require foods labeled as "gluten free" to not contain more than 20 ppm.
