EPA urged against classifying biotech plum as pesticide product

Some stakeholders are telling EPA not to classify the genetically engineered C5 HoneySweet Plum as a pesticide product, arguing that the gene it is engineered to express doesn't actually qualify as a plant incorporated protectant (PIP).USDA engineered the C5 variety to resist plum pox virus by isolating and copying into DNA the gene for the virus's coat protein (CPG-PPV), which is just one of the genes the virus needs to replicate. This DNA containing the gene is inserted into the Prunus domesticus genome, where it induces a process similar to that of the virus.
