Attorney Kenneth McClain says he once asked BASF for $1 million to settle claims by his 45-year-old client, Gerardo Solis, that he developed a rare lung disease as a result of his exposure to the chemical diacetyl produced by the company. BASF reportedly rebuffed the proposal, later offering to settle instead for $350,000.On Aug. 20, a jury in Cook County, 111., ordered BASF opay Solis $30.4 million, believed to be the largest award ever in relation to a diacetyl case.
