FINANCIALS : Yara sees Q2 net profit soar

YARA INTERNATIONAL today reported a big jump in net income after non-controlling interests for the second quarter ended June 30. Net income rose to NKr 3.716 billion ($599 million) from NKr 1.122 billion for the same prior year quarter. President and CEO J?rgen Ole Haslestad said the strong second-quarter results were achieved as fertilizer margins improved and production ran at close to optimal capacity utilisation. He added that the result benefits further from the Nkr 2.6 billion net gain on the sale of Yara's shares in the Brazilian phosphate and nitrogen fertilizer producer Fosfertil. Fertilizer margins improved as realised nitrate prices were up 13% compared with second quarter 2009, and NPK sales to core markets replaced lower-margin tender sales.
