FEATURE: Worlds biggest LNG buyer C JERA C looks to build flexibility, security and value

At the start of July, two of the Japan's largest power utilities C Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and Chubu Electric Power Company C transferred their upstream, fuel procurement and gas transportation assets to a joint venture called JERA. They thus created the world's largest LNG buyer, with an annual procurement volume of 40 million tonnes. The over-arching strategy is for JERA C short for 'Japan's Energy for a new eRA' C to become a global energy company, integrated all along the value chain, from upstream fuel production and procurement to electricity generation. An explicit objective is to use the organisations LNG trading muscle to reshape how LNG business is done.
