Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd has ramped up pressure on parliament to pass his government’s carbon trading scheme this year after the Senate rejected the trading bill last week leaving plans for a cap-and-trade system by 2011 in limbo. Rudd used a major speech to the Australian Industry Group to warn of dire consequences for the economy, including facing “putative tariffs” and missed investment opportunties if Australia’s upper house continues to block the emissions trading scheme.
