India will allow foreign operators to bids in its first round of shale gas licensing in December 2013, as the country looks to fast-track exploration of unconventional reserves. Among the incentives to attract foreign participation in the shale gas round is to exempt companies from payment of customs duties on imports of shale gas exploration equipment and to keep shale oil output tax-free.
