China imported surprisingly large volumes of gasoil in the first two months of 2016, even as exports of the fuel remained very high. The world's second-largest economy imported 22,000 barrels per day of gasoil in January and February, the highest level since April 2015. By comparison, China had only imported 5,000 b/d of gasoil in the first two months of 2015, while December imports were also significantly lower at 10,000 b/d and average 2015 imports were at just 9,000 b/d (IOD Feb.23'16). January and February numbers have been combined for analysis due to the distortionary effects of Chinese New Year.
