The UK's High Court ruled on Tuesday that a local authority had acted lawfully when it granted planning permission to shale explorer Third Energy to frack and produce gas in Yorkshire after the decision was challenged by environmental campaigners. Third Energy won local government approval in May to frack an existing gas well at Kirby Misperton -- the first such ruling since the UK lifted a moratorium on the practice in late 2012 (IOD May 24'16). However, the company's hopes of starting work before the end of the year were dashed after Friends of the Earth (FoE) and local anti-fracking groups secured a judicial review of the decision.
