China's shale gas output skyrocketed by 537.5% year-on-year in the first nine months of 2016 to 6.29 Bcm, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) -- not far off the 6.5 Bcm target for the whole of 2015, which was missed by a wide margin. Shale accounted for 6.3% of China's total gas production of 100.35 Bcm over the nine months, versus only 1% in the same period last year. The bulk of the volumes are likely from Sinopec's flagship Fuling field and PetroChina's Changning-Weiyuan project.
