The Most Confusing Words in Dermatology

The most confusing words in dermatology today must be dysplastic nevus. These 2 words often seem to confuse patients and dermatologists alike. Patients may be confused about what dysplastic nevi are, while their physician may be perplexed about how to manage them. How many patients have we seen whose bodies are covered with excision scars from the removal of what the patient calls "premelanomas" or even "melanomas," when in fact they had dysplastic nevi. This point was recently driven home to me when a young woman came to see me for follow-up after her recent "melanoma" removal.
